Due to the unprecedented impact of COVID-19 on teaching and learning in higher education, we are
announcing 20 remote course conversion grants. These grants will fund twenty courses that already have
been adapted for and taught as remote teaching courses. The goal of the grants is to enhance and enrich
the identified remote course to become a higher-quality online course.
UCR has invested in educational technologies due to the heavy reliance on remote instruction during
COVID. Based on the investments in technologies, such as Canvas, YuJa, Slack, and Gradescope, UCR now
has an infrastructure that can support high-quality online courses. Undergraduate Education (UE) has
also established XCITE, which is UCR’s Center for Teaching and Learning, which will support the
conversion of remote courses into online courses.
These grants are funded by the UC Office of the President through ILTI block grants.
Key goals of RCC grants:
- Promote greater access for students by offering more high-quality online courses at UCR
- Promote student success through pedagogical innovation and best practices in online course design
- Maintain instructional quality by meeting national, evidence-based quality assurance standards
- Maintain instructional equity through the embrace of equitable and inclusive teaching and accessibility.
Priorities for Selection:
There are two priority course groups for this grant call:
Priority #1: Undergraduate general education, gateway courses, or requirements for majors
Priority #2: Undergraduate courses with high re-take rates, lack of available seats, or large waitlists
Each grant provides the following resources – total package - $8,000 per grant:
- $5000 stipend to the instructor
- $1000 to the instructor’s department
- $2000 to cover the cost of a 10-week asynchronous online training certification (foundation + mastery series) from the Online Learning Consortium for the instructor
Course development structure:
On the grant application, please select the priority group that applies to your course. If you do not meet
the criteria for priority, your grant will still be considered but rated lower than courses that meet one of
the two priority conditions.
Each awarded instructor will work with the XCITE staff to redevelop the remote teaching course into a
high-quality online course. Expectations include:
- Awarded instructor will immediately begin an intake session and meeting with an instructional consultant in XCITE.
- Course development will include media consultation sessions with an XCITE media team member.
- Course development may include incorporation of additional educational technologies into your course.
- Course development will include an emphasis on active learning and authentic assessments.
- Course development will include asynchronous learning options to maximize flexibility for students.
- The course will be designed to meet accommodation needs and standards, including video captioning and LMS design that meets universal design standards.
- The course will be taught and delivered in the Canvas LMS
- The course build process will result in a new enhanced course that meets national best practices for online courses.
- Instructors will achieve certification for online teaching from a qualified online provider by the time they teach their enhanced course.
Please note: these awarded courses need to be offered for cross-campus enrollment per the Innovative
Learning Technology Initiative (ILTI). Each course will be listed in the UC system cross-campus enrollment
website (https://crossenroll.universityofcalifornia.edu/). At a minimum, each course will need to be
taught at least twice within two years.
Course proposal elements to include in your application:
- Provide information on how your proposal fits into the two priority areas above.
- Include a description of your course, including the number of students, your teaching philosophy, your instructional methods, and your types of assignments and assessments.
- Include the preferred quarters and years for teaching this course at least twice in the online modality (please note: the online course must be taught twice before or during Fall 2022).
- Include in your proposal the learning outcomes for your course and how you plan to innovate this course.
- Describe your current strategies for how to engage your students in an active and meaningful way in your course.
- Optional: Identify what technologies you might want to leverage in making your course more effective in an online environment.
